Proud to be Finn is a study of self-image and conventions of portraiture and posture. Every one of us has unique image of how do we look and what qualities we want to show in different situations. This mental image is built in dialogue with oneself and expectations of surrounding society.
I invited people to studio with same presumption: They’re about to tell their opinion of Finland. I took a photo of each one with very little direction and let them compose themselves way they felt appropriate. Most of them had never been in a photo studio yet they all had some supposition how to act in front of a camera when taking a portrait.
